I'm an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, Department of Ecosystem and Landscape Dynamics (IBED-ELD) at the University of Amsterdam, where I work across the natural and social science disciplines, and with practitioners interested in creating sustainable communities. I am an active member of the Earth Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (ERSI), a network of current and alumni researchers based at the High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) at Princeton University, the Stockholm Resilience Center (SRC), and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).

My research experience is focused on urban water supply systems. I use complex adaptive systems methods and interdisciplinary approaches to investigate urban water system resilience and sustainability in terms of the services they provide to citizens, and the impacts they have on society at large. I address urban water systems as an example of social-ecological-technological systems (SETS), a type of coupled systems in which human-nature interactions are mediated through built infrastructure and social institutions. More recently, I have also started exploring Human-Environment Interactions, or Social-Ecological Systems (SES) more broadly, including food systems and related livelihood, resilience and sustainability challenges.

As an interdisciplinary scientist I work with a range of scientists across faculties, including the natural sciences, social sciences, economics and engineering, and I have worked with decision-makers and practitioners in a range of cities throughout the world. My goal is to contribute to building more sustainable communities through healthy human-ecosystem relationships. For more information on my research, go to the Research tab.
